At kick off there were only five of the TWFC faithful present. As we were chewing our lips and thinking what to do the team of four lads last seen on 28 October 2015 came by and asked to play us. Those who were there that October night will remember that those lads are quite skilled at free styling, dribbling and shooting. They also have a keeper whose reflexes rival Steve’s.
We therefore played our first match against what was predominantly another team and at the end of the fixture when I asked their team’s name I was told Atletico Madrid. To avoid copyright infringements I have adjusted the spelling and further called them Atletiko Madrid Guests.
Milo and Johnny joined a little later, then Ben arrived too. We gave Atletiko Milo and Ben, in much the same way Arsenal might give Barcelona Walcott and Giroud if they were players short.
Atletiko started the match stroking the ball about inside their own half, making sure that everyone got a touch and the team retained possession. Beautiful Tiki-taka football by virtuoso ‘ballers. Honour was at stake and Al Maher set about showing the young guns who was the Daddy. He opened the evening with the first goal recorded in a match between TWFC and an external team. 1 – 0.
Atletiko went back to their graceful build up, swinging the ball around, at some point their move broke down and from an almost impossible angle AlMaher brought his tally to two and the match score to 2 – 0 to TWFC.
The angle of AlMaher’s second goal (seen from Ant Cam© )
Soon it was 3 – 0 to Tottenham Wednesday’s Orange Bibs.
Slowly but surely Atletiko’s deft passing, dummies, back heels and nut megs were starting to tell and after being struck full on by about the third stinging shot the Bibs’ keeper remonstrated with his colleagues for staying forward and leaving Johnny on his tod in defence.
Atletiko then pulled the score back to 3-2 with a beautifully placed shot that used two Bibs’ players as cover, then a do or die chase of the ball by Ben to the edge of the area. The Bibs’ keeper raised concerns with his team about TWFC being sucked in to playing Atletiko’s beautiful game and not shooting enough.
The game was eventually levelled at 4 – 4 and this meant that Atletiko were in the ascendency. Bibs however were not about to let their first match against an external team end in a loss. The policy of shooting on sight kicked in (pardon the pun) and while Atletiko played the expressive game Tottenham Wednesday played the clinical striking game. Apparently the best way to win a football match is by scoring goals in the opponent’s net. With this in mind, between them, AlMaher, Jake, JonF, Jorge and Johnny brilliantly crafted another three goals to take the score to Orange Bibs 7 – Atletiko Madrid Guests 4.
The next team arrived and opened the gate shortly after.
Match awarded to TWFC’s Orange Bibs 7 – 4.
