Bibs struck first with two well taken close range goals before AlMaher, Avvon and Milo combined to bring the score level.
The sides were locked together, the normally prolific Jake was finding out what it was like to be up against the frugal center back play that is Mark’s trademark. Goals were traded until eventually it was 6 – 6.
JonF, Jorge and Scott had begun to get the measure of the Muftis and Steve was set free to shoot. His shot slipped through the keeper’s grip and rolled over the line but with cat like reflexes Mark pawed the ball back before more than 80% of it had crossed the line. No Goal!
Indignant about the decision the Bibs stepped up a gear and went 7 – 6 ahead. Even Jorge who would normally have been drawn into banter about goal line technology joined the stoic Scott and JonF and let his boots do the talking.
The other team were pulling up in their cars when the Bibs went 8 – 6 ahead. Five minutes left we worked out. Muftis scored a goal back to reduce the Bibs’ lead to 8 – 7.
The other team were getting out of their cars and doing whatever it is another team does before coming to the pitch. The Muftis cut through the Bibs’ midfield. Avvon ran on with the ball, just the man you want on the ball with seconds left. The Bibs were never going to get back in time so the whole evening seemed to come down to Avvon on the ball -v- Steve in goal.
Attacker against defender, an allegory for conflict.
The man with the power against the lone man defending his territory.
Avvon took the ball to just outside the area. Steve resolutely stood his ground.
Avvon unleashed a mighty shot.
With barely a move Steve pulled off a left handed, point blank, reflex save that denied Avvon the equaliser in the dying seconds of the match.
Over the years football has seen Banks, Dickie Guy, Seaman, Cech and de Gea, to name but a few, pull off saves that no one could have anticipated and tonight we can all say we were there when Steve joined them. The tales will grow and the legends will add to that save but only nine people truly saw it and it was inspired. ‘tis for moments like this that we play fitba on a Wednesday night.
The match continued for a few minutes more before the next team opened the gate.
The Bibs had inflicted what can only be described as a beautiful defeat upon the Muftis. The beautiful defeat is that one that happens when each team knows they have played their hearts out and the match was close but one team was edged out by a truly masterful performance from the other.
Match awarded to the Bibs 8 – 7.
